Sound designer, director and animator Tom Scholefield, also known as Konx-Om-Pax, who has worked with labels like Warp, DFA, Planet Mu and Numbers.

Sounds like
‘Inspired by Japanese noise and stoner records, people like Merzbow, Sunn O))) and Earth,’ says Scholefield of his debut release ‘Optimo Tracks’, the soundtrack to a digital installation he created for the titular club. ‘Quite noisy, aggressive music to soundtrack elegant, dreamlike digital animations. Lots of live instrumentation – I worked with Glasgow noise band Vars of Litchi on it – processed through a computer.’

What’s the intention for Display Copy?
‘At the moment just to release the backlog of my own audio projects that I’ve been working on over the years, it feels like the right time to do it. It’ll be a limited three-track CD, with each sleeve individually printed at Glasgow School of Art using traditional typography techniques, because I want them to have a real, handmade feel.’

What are your plans for the future?
‘I’ve got around an album’s worth of material almost ready. My friend Neil Clements and I are also collaborating on a piece for the upcoming Nurse With Wound event which Optimo are curating (Tramway, Glasgow, Sat 26 Jun), so the hope is to release the music I create for that. Beyond that I have a few friends, complete unknowns who are incredibly talented but don’t have the drive or motivation to release stuff themselves, who I’d like to help out. The same thing again, small handmade runs available through the website (www.displaycopy.net) and shops like Mono and Volcanic Tongue.’

"Heres a mix i did in the mid 90s on tape just so i could hear some of my fav Cologne acid in the car.
i was off my face on acid at the time so please forgive a few really bad mistakes
mayday converted the tapes for me some years ago but i thought the mixing was too shit to let other people hear them.
i put it on at Bloc Sunday morning and people were enjoying and asking for a copy.
it was 5 90m tapes and they all flow into each other for nearly 8 hours."

Recorded into Ableton, with a smidgen of compression over the mix. John enjoyed a bigger than normal tea that evening.

The setting is on a floating platform where a group of evenly and carefully placed men live. Each man is aware that the platform is not stable and in order not to fall to their deaths, they maintain a careful balance of weight to prevent the platform from tipping too far and cause them all to fall. This reasonably harmonious understanding is lost when one man pulls up a heavy trunk. In the ensuing struggle, balance is lost in more than one sense.

Mahmut, a 40 year old independent photographer, is a "village boy made good" at least professionally in the big city - Istanbul in this case. After his wife leaves him, he falls into an existential crisis. Then comes his cousin Yusuf, who left his native village after a local factory closed down, effectively unemploying over half the local men. He looks to Istanbul for salvation: a job on board a ship sailing abroad, at once exciting and crucial to supporting his family in the desperately poor village. The distance between the two men is apparent at once, and becomes increasingly pronounced. Whereas Mahmut is adusted to big city life and suffers from many of its neuroses, Yusuf is a lonely, excentric country worker with annoying nervous and hygienic habits, and a sick mother back home he must somehow support. This intimate drama was filmed in the director's apartment in Istanbul, using all his furniture, appliances, rooms, car and so on as the film's props. The actor playing Yusuf is actually the director's real-life cousin, and the actor playing Mahmut is an actual friend, a non-professional actor.

Luigi Russolo, a Futurist, was a man thoroughly bored with traditional music, be it orchestral or chamber. He was bored with the limited timbers, bored with the limited tones and bored with the romantic compositional style of the music during his youth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

“Do you know of any sight more ridiculous than that of twenty men furiously bent on redoubling the mewing of a violin? . . .[concert halls are] hospitals for anemic sounds. There: the first bar brings the boredom of familiarity to your ear and anticipates the boredom of the bar to follow. Let us relish, from bar to bar, two or three varieties of genuine boredom, waiting all the while for the extraordinary sensation that never comes [as] modern music goes round in this small circle, struggling in vain to create new ranges of tones.”

He felt that the noises of the world around him were more interesting that those produced by standard musical means and though the great composers of the Classical and Romantic eras did wonderful things with the orchestra, his ear was satisfied with strict organization and looked for something more. His 1913 manifesto was the first that suggested composers look outside the normal realm of traditional music and instruments, the first to suggest the use of found sound, even though there was no way of reproducing it at the time.

Russolo organized audible sound into six categories separating sound into natural and animal, percussive and wind, and made noise makers that generate these noises. There were twenty-seven “intoners” that when combined made up the “ intonarumori,” a noise making orchestra that Russolo used for several concerts after the First World War. These instruments no longer exist, so not much is know of their construction or the actual sound they produced. What is known is that they were mostly percussion and not electrically driven. Electricity, a technology that in 1913 had not yet been developed for use in sound production is a feat that was not be developed by any inventor or engineer and until the invention of the amplifier and loudspeaker in 1925. The delicate sound and construction of the intoners is perhaps why in the dawn of the period and genre we now think of as 20 th century music, with contemporaries such as Stravinsky and Bartok also looking for new music, that his instruments remained buried and peaked interest only as a novelty to most composers.

Russolo’s influence can be seen in various recordings from the first surviving sound collage by Walter Ruttman (entitled “Weekend”) in 1929 to John Cages “Living Room Music” in 1940 and several artist since then. His concept of found sound, though uneasily realized by the technology available to him is one of the foundation concepts present day post “fluxus” sound artist work with.

In the 1970s the computer graphics for the first Star Wars film (1977) was created by Larry Cuba at the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) (at the time known as the Circle Graphics Habitat) at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

This is an early video piece staring Dan Sandin in which he explains, in general terms, the functionality of the Sandin Analogue Image Processor (IP). This was the instructional video that accompanied the modules for constructing you own Sandin IP.

Sandin was an advocate of education and espoused a non-commercial philosophy, emphasizing a public access to processing methods and the machines that assist in generating the images. Accordingly, he placed the circuit board layouts for the IP with a commercial circuit board company and freely published schematics and other documentation.

The IP is a general-purpose patch programmable analogue computer, which is different from a regular digital computer, and is optimized to process video/television signals and sound. The video is processed through the IP "live" so that the viewer is able to see the effect on video signals. Initially the video is B&W, at the end Sandin debuts the 'Color IP'.
